I learned about Rhino Living from a friend. She knew how much I loved anything to do with the Law of Attraction and working and believing in your dreams and goals.I had an opportunity to hear Dave’s speech. After hearing his inspiring message, I knew I was indeed a Rhino. It was very reassuring to know there was a group of people who felt as passionate as I did about their life’s purpose.
My path might seem random from far away, but it amazes me every day how everything I’ve done has prepared me for my current experiences. From the ages of 19 to 23 years old, I taught Krav Maga (Israeli Self Defense) in South Philly, Berwyn, Glen Mills, and West Chester. In addition to teaching, I was responsible for starting new Krav Maga schools from the ground up and getting them to self sustaining facilities.I worked tirelessly and passionately to build these locations and to positively affect our student’s lives.Nothing made me happier than to see the excited faces of the children and adults who would come through our doors on a daily basis. They knew we were empowering them to be stronger and healthier people, and they were having a blast learning our techniques
Around the age 21, I was diagnosed with a chronic case of Lyme disease and by the age of 23 I had to leave my fulltime position.During that time, I still worked every day to my fullest despite dealing with Lyme.It took about 2 years to get healthy where I felt like I could tackle my biggest dream…music!.Two years ago my boyfriend of 2 years and I started a band called The Moxy with his former drummer. We spent a few months writing songs and making demo recordings on our computers and even started to build a fan base using MySpace. At a Christmas party in 2007 our friend Bam Margera heard our demos “Step Down” and “Lately” and instantly took a large interest in us.
Within 2 months he shot a music video for “Step Down” and got us into the studio with CKY’s Chad I Ginsburg to record our first EP.A few months after that we put us in his Warner Bros movie titled “Where The F Is Santa?” as the main act at the end of the movie.Things were moving along quite well and very quickly. Most bands would only dream of such promotion!
While most people would believe that this is all that is necessary for a band to explode, we knew that there is a ton of more work that goes into making The Moxy grow into a household name.Every day I spend anywhere from 6-16 hours promoting the band and getting our “tribe” of fans to help us spread the word.Coincidentally my skills that I developed building Krav Maga locations are the biggest tools in my kit that I used to build The Moxy’s fan base.It is my job to talk to as many of our fans as I can on a consistent basis, give them any news on our future plans, get them excited about where we’re going and encourage them to bring their friends on this journey with us.
This time last year I was re-diagnosed with Lyme disease and quite devastated with the news that I would have to undergo IV treatment for 2 months.I was told that I shouldn’t be sweating or moving too much and needed to take it easy.Things were just starting to come together for us in the band and I was being told to take a break again. While most days I wasn’t feeling myself, we still played shows, won a regional competitions and kept charging forward.Instead of hiding my condition, I shared it with our fans in hopes that maybe it would help somebody else pull through their own tough time.I was warmly welcomed and indeed I learned so much more about the people who listened to our music. Our bonds grew closer and I was able to keep cultivating our ever important fan base.
We are on the verge of releasing our second EP that was funded almost entirely by fan donations and embarking on our first full tour in August.Life has thrown all kinds of curve balls at me, but my determination stays steady.Being a Rhino means living at your highest potential in good and bad times, forging through the uncomfortable to make a better life and a better community. We are all dealt hardships and lessons and gifts with those hardships. My goals have shifted and changed throughout the years, but my biggest goal has remained the same; to succeed at whatever I put my mind to and to leave a legacy of love and inspiration.
