Like many American holidays, Memorial Day is often just another day off for workers and their families. To add meaning to the holiday, it’s helpful to learn about its history and customs. There are many stories surrounding Memorial Day, but a few are more popular and credible. Records state that after the Civil War, groups of women in both the North and South visited gravesites, adorning soldier's graves with flowers. Whatever stories are true, the main focus is always the same—to honor those lost in service to our country.
Here’s a little interesting history to share with all the Rhinos in your life! The first official Memorial Day was held on May 30, 1868, organized by General John Logan. (The date was chosen because it was not an anniversary date of a battle.) To honor the fallen soldiers of the Civil War, flowers were placed on Union and Confederate graves in Arlington National Cemetery. New York was the first state to officially recognize the holiday in 1873.
It took over 100 years, but in 1971, Congress enacted the National Holiday Act, and the observance of Memorial Day was changed from May 30 to the last Monday in May of each year. Many credit this change of date to the decline of this day of remembrance, as people focused on the three day weekend instead of the original meaning of the holiday. In 1915, Moina Michael penned a poem, "We Shall Keep the Faith," honoring the fallen soldiers remembered on Memorial Day:
And now the Torch and Poppy red We wear in honour of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought In Flanders Fields.
READ entire poem.
She is credited with the idea of wearing poppies on Memorial Day, a tradition we see even today as veterans sell miniature poppy flowers across the country. Congress passed a resolution in the year 2000 to help Americans remember the true meaning of the holiday. This "National Moment of Remembrance" urges Americans at 3:00pm (their local time) on Memorial Day to remember those who have lost their lives in military service to their country.
This has been a special Memorial Day blog to remember all of our fallen Rhinos and their families. Our normally scheduled Tuesday Motivational Rhino email will focus on how you can achieve personal freedom in your life!
Action Steps: 1.) Now that you are more aware of the history behind Memorial Day, share this new found knowledge. Let’s keep the remembrance and history alive by educating others and showing respect to friends and family who have lost loved ones while serving their country.
2.) Show gratitude to those who have or are currently serving our country. The men and the women who serve or have served our country are ALL Rhinos in my book. They enlist not knowing if they are going to be called to war.
3.) Sit down with your children and WATCH this video. Share with them the story of Memorial Day. The more Rhino nuggets we place in our children, the greater the chance they will grow up and make a difference in this world. We are never too young or old to make a difference, Rhinos!

It’s time for Rhino Action! Somewhere in this country, some leader needs to stand up, cut ties with the herd of mediocrity, and start fixing our country!
I continue to watch the news about the oil spill in the Gulf. Both the aquatic life in the water, and the lives of the people that depend on the Gulf of Mexico, are being destroyed. 200,000 gallons a day of oil are spilling into the ocean killing everything in its path.
Why is this happening? Because the politicians will not stand up and do what is right. They continue to do what is popular, and what will get them re-elected, but they refuse to do what needs to be done. We are to blame as well. We are spoiled by our oversized and luxurious American lives. We are used to gas below 3 bucks a gallon and dinner from a dollar menu. A burger for a $1 is not right. Somewhere along the way we must be exploiting someone or something to be able to sell a double cheeseburger for a dollar. If we want cheap fuel, whether its coal or oil, we will have to exploit somebody or something. The Gulf of Mexico, the animals, and people affected by the oil spill did not have to be the victims they are today.
Let's be honest, face it in black and white, and take responsibility. Let's Do It Rhino Style and accept our role in this problem, rather than stand in the field, ignoring our selfish and destructive ways.
A Few Rhino Facts:
There is no such thing as clean coal. Mining coal, transporting coal, and burning coal are all destructive to the environment. We should stop! Yes, people will be out of work for a while, but they will have to adapt. Let's retrain them for new energy. Coal is done!
Oil is destroying the planet. Oil, combined with religion, is the primary reason for the unrest and our wars in the Middle East. It’s a fact! It may make you uncomfortable, but it’s true. We would not be in wars in the Middle East, if they didn't have oil. To keep our economy going, cheaper oil is the number one mission of Washington DC.
Mass farming. This is one of the primary reasons we need cheap fuel sources. It is destroying our bodies and our environment. Eating a 1,000 calorie meal consisting of a burger fries and Coke for $3 bucks is impossible. It can only occur when we manipulate the way we raise animals, how we process them, and how we transport them.
Rhino Solutions: Solar Power. Imagine if every home in America received a $10,000 credit for installing solar panels. It would make the solar industry advance rapidly. Remember just five years ago when a plasma TV was $3,000 dollars? Now that same TV is $500 bucks. Volume makes the difference. If there was $10,000 available to every home in America for solar power, some entrepreneur would make solar easier, more efficient, and more powerful. Plus, all those coal miners would have a safer job!
Electric and Hydrogen Cars. Yes, they exist, and yes, they work! The oil industry blocks their mass production. Obama missed a golden opportunity with GM, Ford and Chrysler. The bailout should have come with three major provisions: Half of the cars must be zero emissions (electric), your gas mileage must be an average over 50 mpg, and we don't pay people $70 an hour to put a bumper on.
Natural Gas, Wind, and Nuclear Power. Yes, all three would be safer then oil and coal. It could eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels and fuel sources from our "enemies."
In closing, you may consider this a strange Rhino blog, but I'm tired of it. I'm tired of our country and our world living a lie. We all know what we are doing is not right. Our fuel sources are killing us, our diet is killing us, and we are destroying the world for our children—all while demanding cheaper and cheaper prices. As we drive from Walmart to McDonalds in search of cheaper clothes, and cheaper menu items, while cruising around on cheaper fuel, we are being cows blinded by the American consumption craze. It’s time to stop!
Rhino Call to Action:
If you’re a politician start making decisions for ten years from now. Make the tough decisions. Stop supporting the archaic industries and their lobby groups. Start funding new technologies. Stop worrying about getting re-elected and do what is right for our children.
Change your life. Sign up for wind energy from your local energy supplier. Stop buying mass quantities of cheaper food, cheaper clothes and cheaper items you don't need. Buy less and buy better. Buy sustainable foods. Buy items made without slave labor and buy only what you need. $5 jeans at Wal-Mart cannot be made in a safe workplace, with well paid workers. It’s impossible! Shrink your footprint, carbon and otherwise.
Take action and get pissed off. Call your senator, your congressman, your President. Tell them to create our future now. Tell them to make the hard decisions now so we can have a better life for our children. How much money have we spent in a failed attempt to stop the oil from flowing in the Gulf? How much money has been lost by the hotels, restaurants, and fishing community? How many animals have died from oil spills? How many coal miners have died? Can you imagine if we spent all of that money on developing new, more efficient energy? Our problems would be solved.
Send this to everyone you know. I ask you to push your elected officials to do what must be done. I ask you to get out of the herd, and start charging to create our new future.
DO WHAT IS RIGHT…NOT EXPEDIENT. WASH YOUR MIND OF ALL COMPROMISE.
We can have a future free of oil, free of coal, and free of exploiting others, to get more of what we don't need, while paying less and less.

I recently had two amazing experiences: The first was getting to speak to a wonderful group of Rhino's at Bensalem High School, and the second was getting to visit Kildare's Notre Dame, which is under construction. Being on Notre Dame's Campus, seeing the stadium, and the history was inspiring.
Opening a Kildare's this summer on Notre Dame's campus is a dream come true and makes me live the Rhino philosophy even more! It also makes me respect the commitment so many people have made to make such a prestigious athletic and academic program. It is a result of people that care immensely and go the extra mile... Speaking of caring and going the extra mile the Bensalem High School experience impacted me even more than Notre Dame. I spoke to an energetic, enthusiastic group of students who were grabbing life by the horns and living their dreams. Speaking to High Schools is not always easy. Sometimes you have to pour your energy into an apathetic crowd and energize them to see their potential. However, this was certainly not the case at Bensalem High School, where teacher CJ Mills had already started his students on the Rhino path. They have read great books like Think and Grow Rich, The Secret and yes...even Do It Rhino Style! I walked into a room of teenage Rhinos eager to live their dreams! These teenagers saw life through optimistic, enthusiastic, persistent Rhino eyes! It was amazing to see the excitement on their face and to hear about their dreams to live an incredible future. They asked insightful questions and they are actively planning their futures! The students even made a short Rhino Video!
Sometimes, all it takes is a caring person like Teacher CJ Mills to take the time to teach his students the secrets to success, to lead by example using the Rhino way, and to give, love, and serve the young people around him. In twenty years, I would love to speak to that group of students again and hear about their adventures. It’s not going to be an easy adventure. There will be ups and downs, successes and failures, but if they keep their horn sharpened and persist, despite adversity, there will be some amazing stories of success to share twenty years from now. "We never know how far reaching something we think, say or do today, will affect the lives of millions tomorrow." BJ Palmer Rhino Action Steps: DO THIS TODAY!
1. Share RhinoLiving.com with a younger, less experienced colleague or coworker. Show them how to set their goals. 2. If you’re a teacher, make your students read the Rhino Living blogs. Make them write a summary on their favorite blog and how it impacts their life. (This worked great for CJ Mills and the students at Bensalem.) 3. Take the time today to review your bigger goals and take three action steps towards it—it could be an email, a phone call or a letter. Just get out there and charge forward!!

Have you ever felt mad at the world? Perhaps you are feeling mad at the world right now! I want you, for the next five minutes, to write down all the things that are pissing you off. You can even use the back of the sheet of paper...and curse all you want. Some of you may even put my name on the list because I am asking you to do this. You'll thank me later! If you are really feeling pissed off, whip out your spiral notebook and make sure your pen has enough ink.
Did you know that 75% of an average person's day is filled with negativity? How horrible is that? Negativity only attracts and creates more negativity. Every negative has a positive. Your life will completely change if 75 percent of your day was filled with positivity! The expression, "I'd rather be pissed off, than pissed on"... I want you to flush it!
After you are finished writing down all the things that are making you mad at the world, I want you to look at the things that are in your immediate control and circle them. The ones that you can deal with a little later, place a check mark beside them... and the ones that are not in your control whatsoever, cross them out! Now, look at it all of these negative issues through a Rhino's point of view. You need to turn your lemons into lemonade! You need to become an inverse paranoid...that is the SECRET TO SUCCESS!! The Secret to Success is to find the positive in every negative situation. For every negative thing you have listed on your piece of paper you can find or create a bigger positive. Every setback, every failure holds the seed to a greater success. Successful people know this and use this tool everyday. When is the best time to buy a house or a stock? When the market is bad! When values are down, demand is down and it is gloom and doom. In the real estate or stock market, that is when you find the bargains. The same is true of your own negative problems. They are the lows, the valleys in your personal or professional life. There is only one place to go...up! The negative situations or problems in your life are the opportunities you have been looking to discover. Beside each negative on your list, put next to it at least one positive situation it creates or one opportunity it creates. Find the good in every situation, seek the opportunity in every valley so you can create your next peak!
Remember, I'm not just a writer or speaker. I am in the real world dealing with many of the same problems you face. I have dealt with thousands of serious business crises in my careers, and the key is to find the positive and focus on it.
As an example, when I was a Chiropractor, many insurance companies were eliminating Chiropractic coverage... A very serious negative. The opportunity it created was that the thousands of people that wanted Chiropractic care no longer had insurance for it, so I created a fee system based on providing quality care at an affordable rate for those patients that lost insurance coverage. Not only did it help my current patients, but they in turn referred me hundreds of other patients just like them. The negative cut backs of insurance coverage actually became one of my most successful practice building techniques. In the restaurant business, over 10,000 restaurants closed in the past two years. Did I run for cover because of the negative economic times? Absolutely not. I looked for all the opportunities to aquire great locations at a significant discount. Sites that other restaurants had invested millions of dollars in I could pick up for thousands of dollars. It is essentially buying at a low price when the demand is low. When demand is high again, we will be in a great position.
The Secret to Success is to find the tremendous opportunities that exist when everyone sees nothing but failure. It all starts with how you look at it. You can see the problem or the opportunity. Focus on what you can change, improve or take advantage of, and focus on what is in your control. Start with your attitude. If you are mad at the world and continue to focus on why you are mad at the world, you won't be able to charge at your goals because your mind is so cluttered. De-clutter, focus, strategize and charge forward with a positive mental outlook!
YOUR RHINO ACTION:
1) Now that you are focused, I want you to list five positives for every negative on your list. Five possible opportunities that are created by the things that are currently bringing you down.
2) Become an inverse paranoid. Start to believe that the Universe is actually conspiring to do good for you! Act, think, walk and talk with positive enthusiasm. Send five thank you notes out today to start the positive energy flow.
3) Decide how many "Do It Rhino Style" books you need to buy for your team or family, and order them today! We're live on Amazon! ORDER HERE! This book can change people's lives! Send it to them as a positive change in your life and their life.

Happy St Patrick's Day Irish Rhinos!
My good friend Pat Croce gave me the nickname “Irish” about 5 years ago. There are certain people I have met through Pat that only call me “Irish.” It’s a name I wear with pride.
With St. Patrick's Day upon us it’s easy to think of beer, ham and cabbage and wearing the green. But there is something much more special about being Irish (besides our amazing livers!)
The Irish have suffered hundreds of years of starvation, persecution, poverty and discrimination, but they have managed to become writers, presidents, have become powerful in every country in the world, and they have accomplished this while maintaining a humorous attitude and a positive outlook. They have managed to charge through wars, racism and poverty, while keeping focused on creating a better life for their family.
My family came from Ireland in the 1840's. Irish Catholics were fleeing Ireland for a better life free of famine and religious discrimination. When they came to America, one side settled in farm country in Maryland and another went to coal country in Pennsylvania. They came to the US looking for the "streets of gold," but they soon learned that the streets weren't paved at all—much less with gold. Then they realized the Irish were the low cost labor force expected to pave them. They soon were confronted with signs saying "Irish Need Not Apply," "No Mick's Allowed," "No Catholics Allowed," and ‘Paddy Wagon’ was not a term of endearment! Did they give up? Did they whine and complain? No! They charged through every adversity that blocked their mission to create a better life. The focused on working hard and creating opportunities.
They also found any work possible. They worked in the coal mines, the railroads, and farming. They worked for pennies a day. Their young boys started working in the Pennsylvania coal mines at 6 years of age. They faced adversity, and they made the best of it. They held true to their beliefs, their dreams and their goals. In my own family, one generation was in the coal mine, and the next generation was in medical school. It’s the American Dream come true! This just goes to show that if you work hard, accept responsibility, and apply yourself, you can provide a better life for you and your children. Don't make excuses, make opportunities!
It doesn't matter your color, your race, or your religion. With dedicated hard work, you can improve your position in life and this world. Every generation can move forward further than the previous. That is what the Irish taught us.
When I think of why the Irish were able to move forward so rapidly from poverty to success it comes down to a few major points:
Attitude-- The Irish are known for their perseverance, wit, hospitality and work ethic.
Future Focused-- The Irish always dream of the future and talk about brighter days. They knew they wouldn't be in the coal mines forever, but they knew they had to prove their value in America. They suffered horrible conditions, poor pay and moved forward. They didn't spend the next 75 years complaining about their first 75 years in America. The moved beyond their past to create their future.
Optimistic-- Somehow with hundreds of years of war, starvation, persecution and poverty, the Irish managed to maintain a positive outlook on life. Somehow they focused on the fact that their best day had not happened yet. This optimism kept them working and moving forward every day.
So this St Patrick's Day, raise your pint to the Irish. If you are Irish, take a moment to thank your Irish Rhino relatives that worked 20 hour days for pennies in coal mines, that took worthless dirt and worked it to useable farmland, that laid the railroads that helped create the industrial revolution all while they were being told "Irish Need Not Apply." They sacrificed so we can live our dreams and their Rhino Attitude is buried deep within us.
Cheers to all my Rhino Relatives, all of my Kildare's Irish Pub family and to all our Rhino's on this St. Patrick's Day!
